An investigation has been launched by the Minneapolis Police Department regarding accusations from undercover journalism outfit Project Veritas that people linked to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) participated in illegal ballot-harvesting before the election in November.
“The Minneapolis Police Department is aware of the allegations of vote harvesting. We are in the process of looking into the validity of those statements,” the department released in a statement on Monday. “No further information is available at this time on this.”
Project Veritas’s newest video went viral across social media released only a few short weeks before the 2020 general election in which a large number of absentee or mail-in voting is anticipated due to COVID-19 concerns. In Minnesota, the subject of mail-in ballots will now be seen in court as Republicans and Democrats fight it out over a current system that would limit the amount of ballots a third party could have in their possession for others.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the state’s Supreme Court recently permitted voting to carry on without a three-voter limit on the quantity of ballots any one person can accumulate.
President Trump promptly requested that the Justice Department look into the charge, which also takes into account of accusations of a cash-for-ballot plot.
“This is totally illegal,” Trump affirmed this past Sunday, linking to an article on the subject. “Hope that the U.S. Attorney in Minnesota has this, and other of her many misdeeds, under serious review??? If not, why not??? We will win Minnesota because of her, and law enforcement. Saved Minneapolis & Iron O Range!” he wrote.
Omar reacted to the claims on Monday by pivoting to a New York Times report saying how Trump paid only $750 in income taxes in 2016.
Project Veritas claims a local community leader named Omar Jamal was the source that exposed the Minnesota congresswoman’s suspected corruption.
“It’s an open secret,” he told Project Veritas. “She [Omar] will do anything that she can do to get elected and she has hundreds of people on the streets doing that.”
“Nobody would say that Ilhan Omar isn’t part of this,” Jamal, a Somali community insider and the Chairman of the Somali Watchdog group, told Project Veritas. “Unless you’re from a different planet, but if you live in this universe, I think everybody knows it.”
The inquiry attempts to present evidence of a ballot harvester saying that he took money to get hold of ballots. It also showcases a suspected harvester who brags about the quantity of ballots he’s gathered for a local official.
There was even secretly recorded footage of a staffer claiming operatives go inside the voting booths with voters to make sure they cast their vote “correctly.”
“They help us at the voting booth. They allow them to help us,” the ballot harvester said on a hidden camera. “They go inside with us and help us, and they actually do that inside there.”
Referring to the operatives, he stated: “They actually are the ones who vote, people don’t usually—they do the voting.”
Veritas also alleges to have contact with a former campaign employee who signified that Omar’s team gave voters cash for ballots.
“[Ilhan Omar is] the one who came up with all this [pay-for-vote],” the source claimed. “[Ilhan Omar is] the one, somehow. Nobody knew, but, yeah, this is something like new with Ilhan.”
Newsweek reported that Jeremy Slevin, Omar’s senior communications director, categorized the inquiry as an effort to delegitimize the election.
“The amount of truth to this story is equal to the amount Donald Trump paid in taxes of ten out of the last fifteen years: zero. And amplifying a coordinated right-wing campaign to delegitimize a free and fair election this fall undermines our democracy,” he told Newsweek.
